Recycling is one of the best ways to reduce CO2 emissions from steel, particularly when using an electric arc furnace (EAF).

Besides using far less energy than primary steel production, almost all of the energy used in an EAF is electricity which is relatively easy to decarbonise.

Steel’s unique magnetic properties make it a comparatively simple material to recover from the waste stream to be recycled. Over 25 billion tonnes of steel scrap have been recycled to make new steel since 1900.
